Online netSlider™ Technology

Our netSlider™ technology assesses audience responses to all types of recorded, broadcast, and live events - including focus group discussions. netSlider™ tests enable larger sample sizes, with faster turnaround and lower cost, compared to more traditional methods of audience research.

Overview of Audience Testing
The netSlider™ is the newest generation of dial testing or audience response analysis. Dial testing arose in the 60's to evaluate television programming and commercials, and is still in use today. Groups convene in theaters or focus group facilities to watch content, rating what they see and hear second-by-second using a hand-held dial. Viewers turn the dial up to show interest in what they see and hear, and turn the dial to a low setting when they feel bored or dislike the content.

A central computer captures and averages the audience's moment-by-moment ratings. The results are summarized in a line graph that rises and falls over time, tracing the level of audience interest.

Survey summary ratings can separate strong programs or commercials from weaker ones, but they provide little context for understanding specific strengths and weaknesses. Dial testing has the added advantage that the moment-by-moment feedback summary guides creative teams in identifying, diagnosing, and correcting problems during program development. However, traditional dial tests have a downside. Because they have historically been held in fixed facilities, dial tests inherit all of the difficulties of traditional focus groups - high cost, long turnaround, local market bias, and the unreliability of small samples.

What the netSlider™ Is
The netSlider™ is an online data collection technology with greater functionality than older dial systems. Created to transfer audience testing online, this innovative method gains the advantages that make the Internet the dominant platform for market research today:

  • Faster turnaround
  • Lower cost
  • Greater convenience to the participant (and often to the researcher and client)
  • Broader geographic representation
  • Ability to target widely dispersed or low-incidence groups

How the netSlider™ Works
A high quality video plays on the participant's computer over the Internet. Members of the online audience use their netSlider™ to rate what they are seeing and hearing on a moment-by-moment basis. The netSlider™ is enabled by clicking their mouse inside the netSlider™ box. Moving the mouse back and forth pulls the Slider to higher or lower ratings on a customizable scale.

netSlider™ Tests are decentralized and delivered on demand. Participants can take part from anywhere in the world, and do so at their own convenience.

Automatic Video Analysis
Data returns to the Reactions & Opinions server for synchronization and storage. The audience's responses are aggregated by demographic groups in real time. A moving line graph or "Trace Over Face" illustrates likes and dislikes in synch with the content as it unfolds over time.

Our patented Automatic Video Analysis System (AVAS™) instantly extracts high and low points of audience response. This makes it easy to identify precise images, words, and phrases that triggered the most positive or negative responses. Highlights and lowlights are available by total sample as well as specified subgroups, and can be customized for number and length. The excerpts extracted by AVAS™ provide a video executive summary in minutes.
